Urgent Request for Road Safety Measures – St James Road/Rotherhithe New Rd and Surrounding Area

Reported via desktop in the Road traffic signs category anonymously at 14:28, Monday 9 March 2026

Sent to Southwark Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 9073924.

I am writing to raise serious concerns regarding road safety in the St James Road area, particularly around the nearby schools. There are at least four schools in this area, and I have personally observed numerous near misses and several collisions involving pedestrians, including children.

To improve safety, I respectfully request that the council take the following actions without delay:

Introduce additional speed calming measures throughout the area.

Install improved school signage, including flashing lights during school hours.

Repaint faded road markings to ensure visibility.

Consider additional road humps, particularly for vehicles entering St James Road from Old Kent Road, outside Selco.

Introduce further road calming measures at the junction of St James Road and Rotherhithe New Road, which is a particularly dangerous location.

Install another pedestrian crossing at the entrance to Selco’s car park.

These measures are urgently required to prevent further accidents and to protect the safety of pedestrians, particularly school children.
